Najib: Important thing is to win
From Nuraina A. Samad in Paris
BARISAN Nasional will accept whatever is the outcome of Sunday's Bagan Pinang by-election but is hopeful that "it will side with us", Datuk Seri Najib Razak said.
"We should not be talking about winning big or small. The important thing is that we win. If we work hard and our campaign is effective, and our message is accepted by voters, we accept the outcome," the prime minister said in response to a question whether he expected a big win in the by-election,
Najib, who is Umno president and BN chairman, was fielding questions at a media conference in Paris at the end of his four-day visit to France.
He said as far as he knew, the BN campaign had been going on smoothly and had received encouraging response.
Still, he added, BN must not stop working hard until the by-election was over.
On claims on the Internet that the result of the by-election would be an indication of BN's performance in the next general election, Najib said one could not base the outcome of the general election on just a by-election, although it was a significant by-election in terms of BN's future.
"You can make all kinds of assessments, but what is important is for us to win and consolidate the party."
Najib was also asked about the proposal to do away with the quota system in Umno elections under a proposed amendment to the party's constitution to be tabled in the general assembly next week.
He said the amendment was to determine a clean selection process in Umno that was transparent, more open and inclusive, and devoid of unhealthy influences such as money politics.
"Its detailed form will only be determined by a special assembly. We can make proposals but the final decision lies with the assembly.
"I am therefore open about it. I have told the political bureau and the supreme council that in terms of the president's post, I do not wish to be protected by the quota system or any rigid conditions.
"What is important to me is the process of election of top posts, including that of the president, is the absolute right of Umno members and this is the spirit behind the amendments."
Najib was drawn to the fact that the quota system was originally intended to allow only serious and qualified candidates to contest the party's top posts.
"There are two ways of looking at it. But at the moment, we are saying that it is up to the special assembly to decide this but our proposal is to make it as open as possible. It is up to the delegates to decide."
On whether Makkal Sakthi, as a political party representing the Indian community, would split the Indian votes in the next general election, Najib said he had explained to MIC leaders that the important thing was the support for BN from the community.
"It matters not whether the support is from a party in BN or outside as long as they support BN. We have parties such as the Indian Progressive Front and a new party (Malaysian Indian United Party) formed by Datuk K.S. Nallakaruppan which support BN.
"This (Makkal Sakthi) is a party that is interested in supporting BN. So, why can't we accept it as a BN supporter although it is not a member of BN?"
Makkal Sakthi, or People Power, is to be launched tomorrow.
